My mother thought she looked like a “black-eyed susan,” so she was known to us as Suzi… she was a sweet dog and a caretaker to the others that followed her.
While not my first Jack Russell, Suzi did bring me many of my “Jack Russell” firsts. She earned my first blue ribbon and my first Championship in Conformation. She was my first venture into the hunt field and my first trip to the Nationals. She gave me my first litter (a singleton). She introduced me firsthand to the devastating disease of Primary Lens Luxation (PLL).
Her legacy is the contribution that she made to the PLL study. With much effort, the DNA from her "family" was collected and used in the PLL study at the University of Missouri. Now in September 2009 the gene mutation that causes PLL
has been found and
there is now a DNA test available!
